hogwarts_hocusOriginal App: Please don't judge meGame Summary: From the comm's info: "Hogwarts Hocus began as a crack parody of elite sorting communities. It has since developed into a hybrid crack sorting community and crack RPG. Note the common factor here is CRACK!" But don't let the emphasis on crack fool you, there was plenty of serious RP as well. It's obviously based in the world of Harry Potter, with characters attending Hogwarts. A... version of Hogwarts, at any rate. Classes tended to be optional, and were taught by player characters. The application process was done ICly, by members interacting with the applicant and voting on which Hogwarts House (of a possible 8) they thought the applicant belonged in, or a vote of Squib if they thought the applicant wasn't suited for Hogwarts (or the game). But the votes never actually mattered OOCly, with the ultimate decision being the Sorting Hat's, who was controlled by several different mods.
How long was your character in Game: From April 2009 until sometime in 2011/12 or so (when the game essentially ended from lack of activity), so a few years. I did have a handful of PSLs with former players that continued things and if those count, Jasper would have technically spent about 7? years at Hogwarts. ...I hope he graduated.
History of Character in their Game: Because of the game's origins as a parody of "elite" sorting communities on LJ, it tended to be heavy with the meta. Characters from canons other than Harry Potter were allowed to already have knowledge of Hogwarts and voluntarily choose to go there (rather than inexplicably appearing there à la standard game mechanics), and that was the case with Jasper, owing to the fact Bella and Edward were already present at Hogwarts. I'd already had several other characters in the game, and was familiar enough with it all that I didn't want to play out the same old, "Where am I? What is magic?" yet again.
So Jasper was among the few who actually
chose to attend the school.
He was plunged straight into the deep end upon arriving at Hogwarts. To give you an idea of what I mean, a sampling of who he met during his Sorting (which was the application process for the game, and counted as game canon):
-the not-quite-human Demyx, who seemed incapable of feeling.
-a talking fish, Nemo. Who had Tribbles.
-a talking dog, Wishbone.
-probably the only proper wizard in the place, Severus Snape. Not very welcoming at all.
-an inhuman medicine peddler/exorcist and his kitten. The kitten liked Jasper!
-the creeptastic Akabane, whose bloody aura caused Jasper to lose control and attack him; Edward intervened. (This would not be the last time it happened.)
-a kitsune, Kurama.
-the personification of absinthe, whose mere presence made Jasper feel intoxicated. An interesting inversion for him.
-a nymph, Amaranth, who requested his help "setting the mood" for an orgy. Jasper made it clear he'd be a nonparticipant.
-a delusional shut-in, Satou, who wanted Jasper as his roommate just to provide round the clock "vampire weed".
-a masked vigilante who smelled like hot garbage mixed with gore, Rorschach. I think he wanted to be eaten. Jasper nearly obliged him, sadly.
-a Jurassic Park raptor who decided Jasper was part of his pack now. He would become Jasper's pet, pretty much.
-an unusually tall, 6'11" eidolon-made-flesh woman, Thecla.
-and of course, the talking Sorting Hat, who seemed to appreciate Jasper's hair a little
too much.
As was customary for monsters of all sorts, particularly vampires, he was placed in Hufflepuff; he was pleased, because it was where his wife Alice had been Sorted during her prior stay at Hogwarts, a couple years before his arrival. She was no longer at the school, but that would soon change. Unsure of what Alice had told Hogwarts residents about their relationship, Jasper at first referred to her as his adoptive sister, but when it became clear they wouldn't have to maintain such pretenses, he started wearing his wedding band again and referring to her properly as his wife.
Instead of staying in the Hufflepuff dorms, he was taken to Ravenclaw's by his new human roommate, Satou, to fulfill their agreed-upon bargain, accompanied by the strangely docile dinosaur who had decided to adopt Jasper. His Hikikomori roommate was quite a weirdo, but Jasper found him easy enough to get along with and they settled into rooming together without much incident. The raptor made use of Jasper's bed since the vampire never slept.
His introduction to Hogwarts classes began with Divination, as taught by Kusuriyuri, the exorcist he had previously met. The tarot lesson facilitated him meeting Maddie Magellan, who discussed her investigation of the magic school and shared gossip with him. He found out some things he'd have rather not known about the rape of a student, and it understandably troubled him. This wasn't what he'd expected at Hogwarts to say the least. And it unfortunately wouldn't be the last horrifying incident he caught wind of, with the rumours of rapists, murderers, and paedophilic werewolves having roamed the school at one time.
(... I avoided the dubcon/rape plots and associated threads, so the above development never really went anywhere, tbh.)
A few days later his wife also returned to Hogwarts, and the two shared a sweet reunion — Alice confessed to having witnessed Jasper's Sorting with her precognitive abilities, embarrassing moments included, naturally. They discussed the strange time anomalies that were present within the school, namely how Bella and Edward were technically from what was the past to Jasper and Alice. This was a common enough occurrence that they grew accustomed to it, but never did find an explanation for it. They also began sharing a room.
He attended the personification of France's Sorting, accepting French citizenship (however that works) in exchange for voting Francis Bonnefoy into a House. This was standard practise for new Hogwarts arrivals, and Jasper accrued a variety of interesting things in this manner.
After the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's Sorting, Jasper encountered him in the hallway and helped him get better acquainted with the oddities and customs of Hogwarts, and despite the Baron mistaking Jasper's attraction to the smell of his blood for an altogether different sort of interest, they developed a friendship. The unlikely pair grew closer over time, and when the Baron eventually took over as professor of Muggle Studies, Jasper was happy to accept the offer to become his assistant.
Time passed, and he found himself enjoying the almost meditative quality of helping the gardener and budding chef he'd befriended, A, in his gardens outside (despite Jasper's embarrassing dermatological bling problem), and between that and the occasional Herbology classes with the kitsune professor, he steadily improved his gardening and plant-wrangling skills.
One day he sought out the source of the intense waves of misery and angst emanating from the Sorting room, and there he met the castle's newest arrival, Elric of Melniboné, whom he attempted to calm with his empathic abilities while they talked shop about magic and demons. Elric would later become a thorn in Jasper's side after somehow convincing himself that the Baron Harkonnen (as well as Jasper, to a lesser extent) was his patron demon in disguise on that plane of existence. This was of course all delusional nonsense, but Elric was nothing if not persistent — and unhinged — and for many months demanded his "patron demon" send him home, a plea which fell on deaf ears.
Because of the relative infrequency of classes that were held, Jasper took matters into his own hands and devoted himself to his magical education with the help of Hogwarts' expansive library, which was maintained by the ever helpful Archangel Michael. That he didn't bat an eye at an angel librarian was a testament to how unusual this iteration of Hogwarts was; there were stranger things than angels there. He was study buddies with a cyborg, Victor Mancha, and the two became good friends, usually partnering up for the rare classes that
were held. (Some of this was played via PSL rather than in the community, but it was fully permitted to be game canon.)
One type of magic in particular that he studied — transfiguration charms specifically for altering clothing — was due to his wife's love of fashion and his desire to make her happy. (Tragically, he rarely got an opportunity to use it. Zephyr permitting, please let him woo you with his clothes magic now, Alice.)
The various ghosts that roamed the castle, other students, and even some of the talking portraits also aided him in his studies. He immersed himself in knowledge and was content. He soon put his expanding skillset to good use when he convinced a giant sentient robot, Starscream, to let him play magical mechanic and tend to his injuries.
Still unsatisfied with their interrupted fight during Jasper's Sorting several months prior, Akabane had taken to stalking the vampire and harassing his human part-time roommate to get his attention. And get it he did. Once Satou was safely out of the way, and against Jasper's better judgement, he and Akabane took their confrontation to the more spacious Great Hall. Akabane's knives could do little more than slice through the vampire's clothes and it hardly seemed like a fair fight — until Akabane exploited Jasper's weakness, goading him into a bloodlust and allowing him to drink from him. The vampire's venom soon caused debilitating pain, while Akabane's blood was like poison to Jasper as well; needless to say it wasn't a good time, though both would go on to make full recoveries eventually. From then on Akabane let him be.
Jacob Black showed up for a hot minute at the school, but, curiously, Jasper never saw him again outside of his Sorting. There was no explanation for the strange occurrence.
Because the player never finished tagging their Sorting, but I think the meeting still probably counts.A student, George St. Barleigh, had somehow managed to shoot himself in the foot during one Muggle Studies class. The poorly bandaged wound was still bleeding when he later stopped by the classroom after hours to make up what he'd missed, and unfortunately the smell of it quickly overwhelmed Jasper and caused him to attack the man while Vladimir could only watch. A lucky chance visit by Glorfindel led to him intervening, and when Jasper turned his attack on him, the elf managed to knock him out using Elvish magic. That was the first time in nearly a century and a half that Jasper had been unconscious, and the whole ordeal was highly disconcerting.
The situation was only made worse when he later discovered he'd inadvertently made George into a vampire despite the school-wide enchantment that should have prevented death. But for his part, George surprisingly didn't blame Jasper (and even sent him Christmas gifts), and seemed remarkably unfazed by what should have been a deeply traumatising experience, Jasper thought. He actually seemed to enjoy being a vampire and his newfound abilities. Jasper tried not to dwell on it.
Vladimir was more frequently showing an uncharacteristic level of concern for Jasper's well being, particularly regarding his struggles with blood. On several occasions he'd lost control and attacked people in Vladimir's presence, who despite normally taking pleasure in bloodshed knew how deeply upsetting these lapses in self-control were for Jasper, and did what he could to help lessen Jasper's distress and reassure him that he wasn't the monster he thought he was. (
"Tigers weren't upset about being tigers- why should vampires be upset about being vampires?") Their relationship had grown to the point that, the Baron's overt sexual interest in Jasper aside, he considered the vampire to essentially be a son. For his part Jasper also considered Vladimir family and felt very protectively toward him — leading to some unflattering nicknames from others, such as "attack dog" — but would never reciprocate his more carnal attraction. He gave Jasper a House Harkonnen signet ring one Christmas as a symbol of his unofficial adoption; Jasper was seldom seen without it.
Things with Elric finally came to a head during the next Muggle Studies class.
The class involved the students being divided into teams, armed with fully functional guns, and let loose to shoot each other in a game of capture-the-flag. This was entirely of Vladimir's own devising, of course. An unbreakable enchantment prevented anyone from actually dying on school grounds (except when, you know, it didn't), but considering the likelihood of bloodshed the Baron had excused Jasper from assisting him with this — though Jasper showed up to collect his raptor after getting word that he was wreaking havoc on the field, then left without incident. Elric made his entrance shortly afterward.
With the help of one of Hogwart's resident dragons
whom I also played, Smaug, Elric successfully gatecrashed the class, "winning" the war game by taking both flags while students fled the field. Which was being consumed by dragonfire. Smaug then turned his attack on the Baron only to be stopped by Elric, who pleaded for the life of his "patron demon", and a grateful Vladimir finally agreed to speak with Elric. Jasper heard about everything later and remained wary of the crazed albino, but things did calm down for a while.
Over time the Baron had grown increasingly fond of the professor of Potions, Valentine Wolfe, and this led to the two eventually becoming engaged. Jasper took it upon himself to help with the arrangements for their elaborate wedding on school grounds, also covering some of the expenses as a gift to the couple. With the band Dethklok providing the wedding soundtrack via live performance, their music soon induced the sort of chaos and mass hysteria that it was known to do, and that Vladimir and Valentine had fully anticipated. Another attack by Smaug, now joined by the dragon Ancalagon, made for a very fiery and memorable end to the festivities.
Jasper will be pulled to the Meadous sometime after this.
How did they change from their canon personality wise (Please explain what caused it to happen?) Daily life at Hogwarts, especially as a teaching assistant, necessitated interacting with a wide variety of beings, from those he was already familiar with — humans, vampires, and werewolves/shapeshifters — to the more fantastical (to him) dragons, elves, dinosaurs, aliens, cyborgs, robots, demons, demi/gods, angels, personifications of countries, etc... And of course all the other canon races present in the Harry Potter universe as well. Compared to his canon prejudice against werewolves (although because of his canon point, this had been decreasing already), he learned to let go of such grudges at Hogwarts, with only a few exceptions who personally slighted him in some way. But his dislike for them was because of
who they were, not
what they were. He had a lot of healthy growth in that regard.
He roomed for a long time with a human, in part hoping that the constant exposure would inure him to the scent of human blood, with dubious results. It didn't really help. He continued to struggle with his thirst for the duration of his time at the school, and harboured guilt over each and every time he lost control. The spell which prevented death from occurring on school grounds was a small comfort at best, especially when it didn't seem to always work. His self esteem really took a hit, and he was a bit worse off than he was in canon.
Jasper underwent a fair amount of emotional growth, both good and bad, with the one, unchanging constant for him being Alice and his love for her. Though she was with him only very briefly during his time at Hogwarts, she was never far from his thoughts. The depth of his feelings that developed for some of the others he was especially close to at Hogwarts surprised him. A couple of the most noteworthy examples being his longtime friendship with Victor Mancha, and the Baron Harkonnen, whom he'd grown to love as a surrogate father/mentor of sorts in spite of the man's occasional depravity. In a way it also made Jasper yearn for a closer relationship with his (canon) vampire parents, who he felt kept him at a distance compared to their other adoptive children. Understandably so, in his mind, considering how he struggled with their "vegetarian" lifestyle and messed up so often, but that didn't diminish his desire to be more fully accepted into his family. In other words, he'd developed more family angst than what he's shown to have in canon.
How did they change from their canon physically (Please explain what caused it to happen?): Being a vampire, Jasper's unable to age or really change physically. He can be scarred (by other vampires' venom — yes, sparklepires are venomous) and style his hair differently, and if he imbibes human(oid) blood his gold eyes will turn burgundy/crimson for as long as he continues to, but that's about the extent of it. He incurred several grievous injuries during his time at Hogwarts, but they healed without leaving a trace, except mentally.
Powers: Jasper possesses the
usual — supernatural speed, stamina, strength, reflexes, and senses. He has perfect recall. He is also an
empath, with the ability to both feel and manipulate others' emotions for as long as someone is within range of him, and physical contact amplifies it. This isn't limited to humans and vampires; it's been shown to work on shapeshifters as well. At Hogwarts, he was able to use his ability on any sentient beings — including a sentient robot.
Because his canon powers weren't game-breaking, they were never nerfed.
During his time at Hogwarts he learned a lot of magic (I don't think I could make an exhaustive list, but suffice it to say nothing was game-breaking), as well as how to brew potions, if that counts as a power. He also learned how to shield his thoughts.
Possessions: His wedding band (obviously the most important item), wallet, ID/passport/related travel documents, wand, a few sets of fancy dress robes (wizard style) and dress clothes,
a House Harkonnen signet ring, miscellaneous books on magic/magical creatures with his handwritten annotations throughout, photos of his family (the Cullens) and the dorky wristband with their crest on it, his
acoustic guitar and the other Secret Santa gifts, an
electric guitar and all of Dethklok's albums, a
wizard chess set and one of a pair of two-way mirrors, a
painting depicting when Jasper and Alice first met, a
homemade mix tape and stuffed penguin,
bottles of blood,
a silver flask, a
matching sword and dagger set,
cufflinks and a wizard day planner, and some shed raptor teeth.
... There was more, but yeah that's probably enough. All of this was able to fit inside his regular, non-magic travel trunk, which would easily fit in the bed of a truck.
Please provide three samples from your previous game, at least one will have to be third person with context: Sample One:
Meeting Baron Harkonnen, wherein the Baron pervs and Jasper vamps. But it ends well.
Sample Two:
Reunited with Alice. (CW: nongraphic sexual content toward the end.)
Sample Three:
A bleeding Lieutenant George St. Barleigh shows up for Muggle Studies, Jasper goes into a bloodfrenzy, Glorfindel knocks him out. (CW: vamp gore. I also played Glorfindel, so sometimes their tags were combined. And I feel I should mention George's player
wanted him to become a sparklepire, pretty much for the lols; forgive me.)
Notes: Jasper's wiki entry that includes his history and
canon wiki since they were never required on my original app. I'm gradually adding a ton more info
here as well. And Jasper may as well share a home with Alice, whose player is cool with it, since they'll end up living together regardless.
